Favourite Paddling Routes
Anjigami River Canoe Route
This paddling route is located in the heart of the stunning Algoma region, an area known for its majestic lakes, winding rivers, and beautiful waterfalls. This picturesque route takes kayakers and canoeists past breathtaking landscapes and offers plenty of opportunities to experience remote areas along the river’s banks. Whether you’re a beginner kayaker or an experienced adventurer, Anjigami River Canoe Route has something to offer everyone.
Dog (University) River Canoe Route
The Dog River is excellent for wilderness paddling and canoeing enthusiasts, as it offers a white water experience similar to Pukaskwa National Park . Its standout feature is Denison Falls, which is situated approximately 5 km from Lake Superior. it is a remote location with beautiful scenery–a perfect getaway for only the most experienced springtime paddlers.
Lake Superior Park Coast
There is more flexibility in trip planning on the Superior Coast south of Wawa and one to five day trip options are possible. Although less remote than Pukaskwa, this coast offers spectacular scenery from rocky headlands to sandy beaches with sand dune topography. The Park abounds with rounded pebble beaches and there are a number of very significant native sites including Devil’s Chair, Devils Warehouse and the Pictographs at Agawa Rock. Be aware that there are special rules that apply to Park visitors even if you paddle.
Dog Lake to Lake Superior
This 3 – 5 day paddle follows the Dog, Manitowik, and Whitefish Lakes then the Michipicoten River to Lake Superior. It is part of the historical link in the trade/transportation route from Lake Superior to James Bay. In addition to great wildlife viewing, you can find pictographs on Dog Lake. Also visit the abandoned Hudson Bay Post adjacent to Buck’s Marina on the Michipicoten River.
Fenton/Treeby Lake:
Located just south of Wawa in Lake Superior Park, this 16 km paddle through 6 lakes makes a good day trip or relaxed overnight trip for novice canoeists. It’s a good sample of Boreal fringe forest. And, Treeby Lake with pine covered islands is quite scenic as well.
Sand River Canoe Route
This 5 day trip covers 56 km from Sand Lake to Lake Superior, all within Lake Superior Provincial Park. With an elevation drop of 185 m, stretches of fast water, boulder rapids and two spectacular waterfalls, this paddle is a must do for wilderness paddlers and those who sea kayak.
Michipicoten Island
Michipicoten Island is as often shrouded by fog as it is by mystery, legend and superstition. Guarded by legendary and mystical 60 foot tall giants, the island floats in Lake Superior about 60 km west from Wawa. Plan on a week to circumnavigate with your kayak.
Michipicoten River:
The mighty Michipicoten forms part of Canada’s historical fur trade route tracing from the Hudson’s Bay Fur Trading post near Lake Superior to James Bay. If you have 3 weeks, paddle north and east following the Michipicoten/Missinabie to James Bay. Alternatively, you may follow overnight or half day tours down river finishing at Lake Superior. Sights include Silver Falls and historic Hudson Bay Trading Post.
Magpie River
A day trip suitable for novice paddlers (depending upon water levels), the Magpie River experience includes Wawa’s famous treeless area. This unique landscape is reminiscent of the Arctic Circle. Be sure to make a lunch stop at Bathtub Falls.
Obatanga Park Canoe Route
Obatanga Park is located on Hwy. 17, about 55 km north of Wawa. This 3 day to 5 day canoe route begins at Hammer Lake, just north of the Park and extends through the University, Obatanga, Knife, Crayfish and West Kabenung Lakes finishing just south of the Park. The route is very picturesque with rocky shores, occasional sandy beach and tall pine covered hills.
Pukaskwa River Canoe Route
The Pukaskwa is a classic northern wilderness white water river, running south of the Canadian Shield into the remote and rugged nature in the north shore of Lake Superior. It offers solitude, challenging white water and spectacular scenery. This is a spring river route a trip for experienced white water paddlers only.

We are driving from Ottawa to Vancouver with lots of overnight stays in chain hotels. This stay was by far the best. Clean, comfortable and friendly. Highly recommend. Only minor criticism was that as we had to leave very early, coffee was not available. Pot in the room would have been icing on the cake.

September 30, 2022I have been to dozens of motels across Canada, but this motel is by far the best!! Not 5 stars but 10 stars!! Ray and Lynn, together with their staff, are great people. Ray and Lynn make you feel almost like your family from the first moment. The rooms are beautiful, everywhere is clean, everything is working, WiFi is amazing, they even invite you for a coffee and cookies in the morning! This motel is better than many 4 star hotels!! I have been here twice and will come again. Thanks Ray and Lynn you are the best!!!!

We are doing the Lake Superior Circle tour on our motorcycle and have stayed in various places along the way. We would definitely recommend The Outdoorsman. Also close enough to places to walk to eat if you don't want to ride your bike to dine.

August 30, 2022Love this place ❤️. Its warm and cozy. The new owners welcome you like family. The outdoorsy and country theme is inviting. Brand new everything from the rugs to the unique lamps. Took a day long motorbike ride with friends and and were happy to rest at this little gem. They even provided free shammys to wipe our bikes down. The new owners are delightful and helpful if you need anything. The rooms have a full size fridge and freezer to store anything you may pick up across the street at the local grocery store. There is also a beer store and restaurants less than a block away. Outside there are new barbecues and also lawn chairs for you to enjoy the fresh air. Last but not least , fresh delicious coffee and just baked cookies offered in the morning. We will most definitely be staying again.

The full size fridge and freezer as well as the barbecues were a great feature for someone like myself who was staying for an extended period of time. The coffee and cookies available early in the morning made for a great start to my work days and the owners were incredibly friendly and personable.

July 30, 2022Stayed here while visiting friends in Hawk Junction. Great accomodations .. clean.. an d a good price. The owner of the place was great to talk to and he had good coffee and cookies out in the morning. He also has two outdoor plugs by the sign so you can plug in your electric car . Its also very close to the Tesla Superchargers .. walking distance if you want . We would stay there again. BBQ's outside if you want to use them . Theres also some lawn chairs outside each room too.

The room was very clean, equipped with a large fridge and microwave. it is conveniently located right in Wawa, walking distance from the downtown. Ray was very helpful and friendly and was able to share more information about the area.

We really appreciated the full size fridge and freezer plus microwave. The parking lot was well lit and in good shape. Also the morning cookies and coffee are delicious.

April 30, 2022I was dreading the thought of looking for a room in Wawa on a Sunday night but we were too tired to keep driving. I chose this Motel after reading so many positive reviews. It is gem! Don't let the rustic appearance of the rooms fool you. The decor is not old and musty, it's beautiful and comfortable. Our room was very clean and had an updated bathroom. We would certainly stay there again.

June 30, 2022This quiet, clean, pet friendly motel in Wawa is one of the best spots we've stayed while traveling the TransCanada. There's a park with a playground directly across the street as well as a grocery store + several restaurants in walking distance. Owners are very kind and accommodating, they obviously love what they do. A note for my fellow vegan/lactose intolerant travellers: they had both Silk Oat and almond milk out for coffee service in the morning. What a thoughtful touch! We will be back again and again. Highly recommend.

No smells, very very clean, beds comfortable, full size fridge in room, chairs outside of room to sit on after a long day riding the motorcycle. The staff are amazing, a fresh pot of coffee was brewed when we showed up to warm up. Nice fresh cookies in the morning. Strongly suggest anybody to stay here
